Making The Best Portable Guitar Stands

By Cornelia White

Even though you may like the thought of your guitars safely packed away, protected from dust and accidental spills, you may also like to keep them within easy reach, so when you feel like playing you can. Guitars are also beautiful instruments that should be on display. The best way of displaying your guitars is to have them on a stand. A portable guitar stand is a good idea too, so that it can be moved wen necessary.

Although there are plenty of stand varieties in the shops, many people consider making their own. This can save you a good deal of money; money which can be spent on other items that are not so easy to make, such as amplifiers etc. All you will need is some wood, or even metal or PVC pipes. Some cutting and measuring tools are necessary too, but if you use pipes you can save yourself some trouble.

If you have decided to use pipes, you will need at least 20 feet of PVC. It is also recommended to buy the pipes that are approximately three-quarter of an inch in thickness. Homemade PVC stands are often liked because they take away the need for nails or welding, and no gluing is necessary. They simply fit together. They are also ideal if you have several guitars that you would like to hang up.

Wood is also the ideal material from which to make a stand. There are also many designs from which to choose. If you don't need your stand to be portable, you can simply hang it on a wall. This sort of stand will also hang several guitars, and is very simple to make. All you will need is a suitable length of wood, bolts, hooks and washers, and equipment to install it.

The hooks will be used to hang up the guitars, and you will therefore want them to be in the right place. You do not want the instruments rubbing against one another. Always measure and mark the place where the hooks should go before putting them in. Two feet apart is recommended.

Always keep a level handy when making this sort of stand. You will use it to ensure your hooks are in line, and you will use it when you mount the wood onto the wall. Once your hooks are in place, you can bolt the wood to the wall, using 3-inch screws and washers.

For a more movable stand, you might consider something similar to a tripod. If built in such a way, the stand can easily be folded and placed in a vehicle. Always start by drawing the parts that need to be cut from the wood, and then use the appropriate tools to cut and assemble them. You can also come up with your own unique design.

Once you have finished the building phase of your wall or portable guitar stand, you can think about its appearance. You should sand the wood so that it looks smooth and takes the paint well. Let the first application of paint dry properly too. Some attractive colors will be ideal, or you can use varnish. The overall look of your stand is completely up to you.
